Function Point Analysis Training Course —— Three (3)days course Instructor: Eva Schielein Software Productivity Research(SPR) • More than 15 years experience in management consulting and training • Taught 30+ Function Point training classes • Expert in software analysis and benchmarking • Experience in adapting FPA to maintenance and support projects • Specialist in effort estimation using FPA • Global experience with FPA across many companies, countries, and technical environments • Dynamic, enthusiastic, clear-spoken communicator (English/French/German) • Enjoys teaching and works very hard with students to ensure they understand the material
Course Introduction The class will be conducted by a professional, highly-experienced function point counter and consultant from Software Productivity Research. This class will be offered by CSPIN and SPR jointly. Classes will be offered in Beijing (April 22, 23, 24) and in Guangzhou (April 15, 16, 17.) Objective The focus of the SPR FPA Course is to educate participants about the concepts, rules, and techniques of Function Point Analysis using the latest rules as published by the International Function Point Users Group (IFPUG) in the Counting Practices Manual, Release 4.2.1 (CPM.) Topics covered by the instructor include counting techniques, administration of the counting activity, documentation, tools used to support counting, and use of FPA to address advanced technologies such as embedded and real-time software, data warehouse, ERP systems, and infrastructure (middleware.) In addition, the course will present concrete ways that Function Points are used in the determination of effort (project estimation) and other management techniques. The course will combine instruction (lecture) and hands-on workshops to familiarize participants with the rules and give practice in using rules to determine function point size (via case examples.) Also, participants will take a short exam at the end of the class to reinforce concepts and be awarded a “Classroom Participation Certificate” by SPR. The class will be three days in duration, covering the following main topics: • Function Points: Basic concepts • Introduction to FPA o Types of Counts o User View o Counting Scope and Application Boundary o Identifying and counting Logical Files o Identifying and counting Elementary Processes o Calculating the unadjusted FP size o The Value Adjustment Factor o Calculating the adjusted FP size • The IFPUG Counting Practices Manual (CPM) 4.2.1 • Putting sizing into practice: Hands-on examples • Validating Function Point counts • Approximating size • Use of counting tools • Using Function Points for software management o Parametric modeling best practices o How to use the results of a FPA o Using FPA for effort estimation Class Detailed Agenda Day 1 MORNING • Lecture: Understanding basic concepts of FPA • Lecture: Uses of FPA for project effort estimation • Lecture: The IFPUG Counting Practices Manual – Definition of Rules and Procedures • Lecture: Functional decomposition • Lecture: Identification of elementary processes and logical files
AFTERNOON
• Lecture: Complexity of elementary processes and logical files • Workshop: Case study A – Practical Counting Exercise [Weather Application] • Lecture and discussion: Class review of Case Study A
Day 2 MORNING • Lecture and discussion: Review of definitions, counting rules and cases • Workshop: Case Study B [APO system] • Lecture and discussion: Class review of Case Study B • Lecture: Enhancement Function Point Counting • Workshop: Case Study C [APO system enhancement]

Day 3 MORNING • Lecture and discussion: Review of definitions, rules, and case studies • Workshop: Special Case study E • Lecture and discussion: Class review of Case study E • Examination (hands-on): Sample Function Point Exam
AFTERNOON • Lecture and discussion: Review of exam answers by instructor • Lecture: Use of interview techniques and analysis of project documentation • Lecture: How to document an FPA • Lecture: Use of FPA for Benchmarking • Lecture: Defining and building a historical project repository • Lecture: Interview techniques • Lecture and demonstration: Using the results of a Function Point Analysis Logistics The class will be held at the facility in Beijing (arranged by CSPIN) and in Guangzhou (arranged by CEPREI).
• Each day will last from 9am to 5pm with appropriate breaks • Each participant will receive a course workbook and associated materials • The exam will be given on Day 3 and results will be reviewed afterward. • Classroom materials (workbooks, exercises, exam etc.) will be supplied by SPR at the time of the class.
