I am project management architecture manager in one of biggest european companies (top 500) and I learnt PMP during my last mission in China.
That's why I think PMP is not a so well knonw certificate, at least in Europe. But I have a look in PMBOOK, it is a good guideline. I think I will integrate some of its principles in the new project management system I am in charge of designing and implementation.
From my experience in project management (10 years in IT and manufacturing in world class companies), you can get strong help from PMP after you get real experience. Without experience, PMP is only a certificate. I would never recruit a PMP guy w/o experience.
But perhaps I will ask futur project manager to have PMP before they can manage project independently.
