Q1. What is my PMI ID number? A. The PMI ID number is given to individuals when they originally apply for the certification exam. It is also the number used for an individual’s PMI membership if they choose to become a member. This number is used to report PDUs and view the online PDU transcript. PMPs who do not know their PMI ID number should contact PMI customer care to receive it. (Please note: this number is commonly referred to as your “Member ID,” even though you do not have to be a current PMI member to have one.) Back to Top Q2. What is my PMP number? A. The PMP number is the PMP certificate ID number. It is located on the PMP certificate as the “Certificate Number.” Back to Top Q3. What are the requirements of the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Program? A. Each PMP must satisfy the CCR in order to maintain their PMP Credential. This program requires PMPs to attain a minimum of 60 PDUs within a three-year cycle and to submit a PMP renewal application upon completion of their PDUs. PMPs must also agree to continuously adhere to the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. Back to Top Q4. What is a Professional Development Unit (PDU)? A. The PDU is a measure of time spent in a structured learning activity. For formalized learning activities, the course content should be consistent with the knowledge areas and processes as outlined by The PMBOK® Guide and involve appropriate expert resources. One (1) PDU is given for each hour of structured learning. Fractions of hours will be accepted in .25 increments only after the first hour of learning is earned. An activity or group of related activities must be a minimum of one full hour to be accepted. (Ten minutes per each hour for breaks are permitted in programs that exceed one hour in length.) Please note: A specified number of PDUs may also be earned for service to the profession and for specified professional activities. Back to Top Q5. What types of professional development activities are acceptable for earning PDUs? A. PDUs may be earned from a wide array of activities involving learning or service to project management. The CCR program categories identify the various types of appropriate professional development activities. PMPs may earn all of the required 60 PDUs from a combination of categories or from a single category with the exception of Category 5 (Service to the Profession), Category2sdl (Self-directed Learning) and Category 2h (Practitioner of Project Management). Back to Top Q6. Do I have to get PDUs in all of the categories? A. No, the PDU requirement can be obtained through the use of all, some, or only one of the identified categories. Back to Top Q7. I participated in an activity (e.g. academic course or seminar) in which only part of the program focused on project management issues. How do I determine the number of PDUs? A. In this situation, PMPs should estimate the percentage of time that was directly relevant to project management and assign PDUs accordingly. For example, a 15-hour course deemed 50 percent relevant would earn 7.5 PDUs. PMPs should be prepared to justify their estimates in the event that they are randomly selected for auditing purposes. Back to Top Q8. How do I submit my PDUs? A. Directions for reporting PDUs are in the Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook. Back to Top Q9. When and how should I report my professional development activities? A. PMPs are responsible for reporting all of their activities as they occur. PMPs should make the appropriate number of copies of the PMP Professional Development Activities Reporting form, enter the required information and mail or fax the completed form to the PMI records office (see address on form.) Additionally, PMPs now have the option of directly reporting their PDUs online. Back to Top Q10. Can I submit the activities online? A. PMPs can now submit PDU activities online via the online form on the PMI Web Site. Back to Top Q11. I just submitted my PDU claim with the online form and my submission is not listed on my online transcript. What is the problem? A. When a PDU claim is submitted with the online form it is not entered directly into the PMP’s record. All PDU submissions are reviewed for completion before being entered into a PMP’s record. Please allow the same amount of time for online submissions to be processed that is given to regular submissions. Back to Top Q12. What activity documentation is required? A. PMPs should retain sufficient documentation in their personal records to support all submitted activity reports. Required documentation is listed under each of the activity categories. Back to Top Q13. When reporting PDU activities, is any supporting documentation required? A. When PMPs report activities for PDU credits, only the completed Professional Development Activities Reporting form(s) should be forwarded to the PMI records office. For self-directed learning (SDL) activities PMPs should also submit the SDL worksheet with the activities reporting form. PMPs should retain all relevant supporting documentation in their personal folder for a minimum of 12 months after the CCR cycle has ended, in the event that they are randomly selected for auditing purposes. Back to Top Q14. How will I know if I my submissions are accepted? A. PMPs may confirm PDU submissions by checking their online transcript. PDUs should be reflected on the transcript within two weeks after submitting the activities reporting Forms to the PMI records office. Back to Top Q15. I was awarded the PMP Credential in April. Do I have to wait until 1 January of next year to begin earning PDUs? A. No, PMPs are encouraged to begin accomplishing/reporting PDU activities as soon as they can after the start date of their CCR cycle. Back to Top Q16. What is the process of certification renewal? What happens at the end of my CCR cycle? A. Below is an outline of the PMP certification renewal process: a. Each month the PMI records office forwards the most current CCR information to the PMI certification department. This data lists the PMPs who have completed the PDU requirements for their certification. PMPs can review submissions anytime by checking their online transcript. b. Each PMP will automatically be sent an application for certification renewal after they complete the necessary PDUs. This application is sent after PMI confirms a PMP's PDU submissions to the certification department at the PMI Global Operations Center. A PMP may receive their renewal package well in advance of the cycle for which it was earned. Example: A PMP is scheduled to expire 31 December 2005 but completes their CCR in 2003. They will receive an updated certificate package that will be valid for their next CCR cycle from 1 January 2006 through 31 December 2008. It is recommended that all PMPs keep certification documents in a safe and accessible location. c. PMPs must complete the application for certification renewal and send it back to the PMI certification department. d. Upon receipt of the completed application for certification renewal, the certification department will process the PMP’s renewal and issue an updated PMP certificate package. PMPs should receive their updated package within 4-6 weeks from PMI’s receipt of the completed application for certification renewal. Back to Top Q17. Will I receive a new PMP certificate once I complete the CCR? A. Yes. PMPs who have completed the 60 PDUs will receive an updated certification packet from the certification department after PMI records confirms that they have submitted the necessary learning activities. (Please be certain that PMI has the correct address information and that all address changes are submitted promptly throughout the certification cycle. Incorrect address information can cause major delays in delivering renewal documents.) Back to Top Q18. If I do not satisfy the CCR, how is my PMP status affected? A. Failure to satisfy the CCR will affect certification status. PMI will suspend and/or revoke the certification of any PMP who does not satisfy the program requirements within one year of the certification cycle expiration date. Back to Top Q19. I just realized that I have not completed the required PDU units and it is past my CCR end date. What should I do? A. PMPs who do not complete/submit the required PDUs prior to their CCR end date will have a one-year “grace period” to meet the requirements. If, after one year’s time the requirements for maintaining certification have not been met, the PMP’s certification status will be revoked. Back to Top Q20. If I submit my required 60 PDUs after the end of my CCR cycle, does my cycle change? A. No, the PMP's cycle does not change. If the PMP's original PMP expiration date was 31 December 2001, the PMP's new cycle is 1 January 2002 through 31 December 2004 no matter how late into the following year the 60 overdue PDUs are submitted. An example: A PMP’s cycle expires on 31 December 2001, but only 30 PDUs have been submitted as of 31 December 2001. In June of 2002 an additional 30 PDUs are submitted, meeting the overdue CCR cycle requirements. A new PMP certificate will be mailed, stating that the next CCR cycle will still run from 1 January 2002 through 31 December 2004. Back to Top Q21. I have exceeded the required PDUs for my current certification period. Can I apply/transfer them to my next renewal period? A. According to a recent ruling by the PMI Certification Governance Council (CGC), a maximum of 20 excess PDUs earned during the final (third) year of the current CCR cycle may be transferred to the next CCR cycle. These PDUs must be in excess of the current CCR PDU requirement (currently 60 PDUs). This process will automatically be executed by the PMI records office. The PMP’s online transcript will be updated to reflect this “carryover” of PDUs into the new CCR cycle. Back to Top
