世界野外摄影比赛大奖于1965年由英国伦敦自然历史博物馆发起，后来《BBC野生动物》杂志也加入了这项赛事的举办工作，并于1984年起将其提升为一项国际性赛事。世界野外摄影比赛一直致力于唤起人们对野生动物产生更广泛的兴趣并给予关注，其宗旨便是保护自然。
