Project Server 2010/SharePoint 2010 must be installed on either 64-bit Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
Your database servers for a Project Server 2010/SharePoint 2010 farm deployment must be the 64-bit version of either SQL Server 2005 with SP3 or SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2.

SQL Server 2008 R2 version includes updates in SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services (SSRS) like connectivity to SharePoint lists and the PowerPivot for Excel feature.
When you install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 R2, you might receive a compatibility warning. You can ignore this warning and continue with your installation.
