It is project manager’s responsibility to build an efficient team when he is in charge of a project. An efficient team means that every team member is a co-author of the project; he works hard for the project and feels happy working within the team.

But imaging a team would be efficient naturally as it is formed is not a reality. Project manager should pay much more effort to build it and manage it. Followings are some tips to build such a team:

First, selecting the right people. Even though most of time project manager can only chose person form a limited resource----the people in their company, they also could get right people by the networking and by negotiating. Project manager should understand what kind of person is suitable for this project by analyzing the project‘s character or feature.

Second, being transparent. Telling all team members what is the goal of the project and everyone’s ROI. Publishing the regulations of team work and the process of decision making. These would make the team member buy-in the project manager’s decision and become a co-author.

Third, trusting team member. Project manager is not expert in every area; they should rely on team to fulfill their duties. Trust means confidence in team leadership and vision. When trust prevails, team members are more willing to go through a difficult process, supported through ups, downs, risk and potential loss.

Fourth, contacting team members. Regular face to face meeting with team member is necessary, it is not only for the project controlling ,but also for understanding what the team member want , project manager should try their best to meet their reasonable wills, if not , tell them why.

Fifth, sharing lesson learned. Sharing lesson learned is much more important than sharing success only. It not only elevates the moral to the on-going project, but also improves the ability in their future career.

There are too many qualities necessary to build an efficient team, but you don't have to be easy-going, well-educated, hard-nosed, or even especially intelligent to build a team. You don't have to be anything other than yourself. You can be effective with people using common sense and a few fundamental principles.
