“The Immanuel Heart Center project has revolutionized the way we care for our cardiovascular patients,” said Sally Lienemann, operations director, Immanuel Heart Center. “No longer are patients required to be moved in order to receive services. Rather, this innovative approach is a patient-centered environment where services are brought to the patient in the comfort of their own private room.”

The Immanuel Heart Center features 20 private rooms, state-of-the-art technology, a family area in each room to encourage family involvement and provide respite, high speed Internet access and comfortable, healing surroundings. Completed in April 2005, cardiovascular patients and their families have responded well to the universal bed concept. Within a universal unit, the clinical staff is specially trained to provide care specifically to the unique needs of patients as they move from intensive to less acute levels of care. Past models of care required that cardiac patients were moved from place to place in the hospital during the course of their treatment.

criteria for both of these awards included how well the project stayed on cost and schedule and as well as demonstrating effective application of the principals set forth in A Guide to the Project Management body of Knowledge (PMBOK). The new cardiac care unit operated under a tight schedule and had limited funding, but by working together and keeping organized, this innovative project methodology was able to go from paper to real life patient care, enhancing both clinical quality and patient safety.
